Who Decides What We Get?

My BA Final Year dissertaion investigates the governance that exist in design and design technology and how that determines the products that become available, their usage and how much importance is put on the end users’ needs. I do not attempt to look at everything available but use the examples chosen as a type. The work is divided into fi ve chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Needs and Wants examines human needs and whether those needs are superseded by human desires.
  • Chapter 2: Utility and Egality looks at the usefulness, product need and why everyone cannot have the best available.
  • Chapter 3: Media and Markets investigates what and who decides which products are placed in the market and when.
  • Chapter 4: Citizen and Consumers looks at how the end user is valued, the consumer society and the abundance of choice
  • Chapter 5: Utopia and Dystopia peeks into the future and investigates how we got there
